Overview
Excavation found houses, hearths and enormous quantities of pig bone killed in midwinter, which says the settlement was seasonal and the gatherings were feasts. The current reading is that Durrington was the place of the living, in timber, and Stonehenge two miles away the place of the dead, in stone, connected by avenues to the river. The bank is now a shallow curve in a field; a replica of one of the houses stands at the Stonehenge visitor centre.
Highlights
Read the interpretation panels before walking it, or the field will look like a field. Woodhenge is on the southern edge and the two are one visit. Park at Woodhenge; there is no other parking. The ground is working farmland and can be deep mud after rain, so boots rather than trainers.
