Overview

The stone was quarried in Italy and split rather than sawn so the fossils in it show, and the whole campus is set at an angle that reconciles the street grid with the canyon it stands on. The collection is small compared with the Met and better for it — a van Gogh Irises, a Rembrandt, Renaissance drawings — and the Central Garden by Robert Irwin is a designed artwork rather than landscaping. From the terraces the city runs to the ocean on a clear day.

Highlights

The tram from the car park is part of the arrival and worth riding rather than walking. Two hours covers the paintings and the garden. The Getty Villa in Malibu is a separate site with the antiquities and needs its own free timed ticket.
