Overview
The cone rose from the sea and was later joined to Jeju by a sand bridge, which is why it stands apart from the island’s other volcanic features. The climb is 180 metres of stairs to the rim, from where the crater bowl is grassed and the sea is on three sides. Below on the shore, haenyeo — the women divers of Jeju, most now in their sixties and seventies — give diving demonstrations twice a day.
Highlights
The sunrise the name promises is worth the early alarm, and the gate opens an hour before dawn for exactly that. Allow forty minutes up. The haenyeo demonstrations at the foot are at one and three and are the last chance to see a tradition that is ending: fewer than three thousand divers remain, and most are over sixty.
