Overview
The chamber is a dome of cut granite assembled without mortar, with the Buddha at the centre and reliefs of bodhisattvas and guardians around the wall — one of the most complete statements of Silla Buddhist art. A Japanese-era restoration sealed the structure in concrete and destroyed its natural ventilation, causing condensation that has been managed with air conditioning and a glass screen ever since. The original design let mountain air pass under the floor and kept the stone dry.
Highlights
The walk up from Bulguksa takes about an hour on a forest path, or a bus climbs the road in ten minutes. Sunrise on the winter solstice aligns with the Buddha’s gaze, which is why the place is full on that morning. Photography is not permitted inside, and the view is through glass from a few metres — knowing that in advance prevents disappointment.
